What are Carpenter Ants & what do I look for?
Carpenter Ants (Camponotus spp.) are found in and around homes, being a large ant typically blackish or very dark bodied. Carpenter ants will establish nests in multiple locations. Outdoor sites include stumps, hollow logs, telephone poles, fence posts and other similar large pieces of wood. It is preferred by many species, wood that is moist or partially decayed. However they may also use cracks, crevices and other cavities to start nesting in wood. They may be carried into homes through firewood or enter and establish colonies through different routes. These ants move into homes to scavenge and feed. Among other methods, foragers often enter homes through tree limbs or wires that touch the house. Thus can cause a nesting infestation that may or may not be in the home itself. Most often the primary nest where the queen is located may be away from the home or other infested structure. While nests located within the structure may be secondary or satellite nests where no egg laying queen is present. Indoor nests may be found in window sills, hollow doors, porch substructures, roofs, baseboards, fireplaces, shingles or other hollow areas. Carpenter ants cause damage to structures and contaminate food. In general, Carpenter Ants tend to be a nuisance more than a destructive pest. Unlike termites, their work on wood is not necessarily rapid. However, an untreated infestation can grow fast and over time can weaken the fabric of a property. Because carpenter ants require a water source, eliminate sources of moisture or standing water. Keep tree branches and other plants cut back from the house. Sometimes pests use these branches to get into your home. Make sure that there are no cracks or little openings around the bottom of your house. Sometimes pests use these to get into your home. Make sure that firewood and building materials are not stored next to your home. Pests like to build nests in stacks of wood.
